Embroidered Silk Postcards
between 1915 and 1917

Note: Though expensive to buy, embroidered silk postcards became one of the most popular ways for British soldiers to send their love back home during the Great War. There were a fantastic number of designs, generally patriotic or sentimental, all seeking to show the bright colours of the threads to their best effect. Flags, butterfly wings, bird plumage and rainbows featured strongly. Also embroidered – usually in a single colour - were a few words. They were originally sold in fragile, thin paper envelopes. So to safely protect them in transit, they were wrapped in an accompanying letter conveying the soldier's message, and placed in a further envelope, and sent home at no charge to the sender in military mail bags. So most 'WW1 silks' are unwritten, with no marks on the back, and do not bear a postage stamp.

Note

According to an entry in Cyril SANDERSON's diary of 11th March, 1945, A.SANDERSON's name is recorded on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres (Ieper), Belgium. However, Elizabeth Walker (nee Sanderson), could find no record of this via online search of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission War Dead database (15/11/2023, https://www.cwgc.org/find-records/find-war-dead/).
This would be consistent with the purpose of the Menin Gate Memorial - to commemorate members of the Commonwealth forces with no known grave.
